Making a Trail

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

On our first night in Kyoto, we went to visit the Kiyomizu-dera temple, which is one of the coolest places I think we’ve been so far. Lit up with paper lanterns, the streets were surreal and all around us were old traditional Japanese homes, narrow winding alleys, and lots of history. The temple was founded in 798 AD. According to one guide we read, the U.S. secretary of war argued against the atomic bombing of Kyoto due to the beauty and history of this place.
